#4

You are familiar with my children, #1, #2, and #3. But have I ever mentioned #4? #4 does not live with us on a permanent basis. But once or twice a year we get to enjoy him for a 7-10 day stay. The symptoms started early in the week and by the weekend we said goodbye to Spouse and hello to #4. The culprit this time: strep throat.

Here are the differences between Spouse and #4:

Spouse is helpful. #4 lays in bed all day.

Spouse is independent. #4 needs me to bring him water and tuck blankets around his neck.

Spouse is fun and playful. #4 needs peace and quiet.

Spouse listens to me complain and wants to solve my problems. #4 can't hear problems and in fact is a problem.

Spouse takes care of me. I take care of #4.

Spouse is a MAN. #4 is a CHILD.

Fortunately I think #4 has one foot out the door and I see glimpses of my man returning to life.

Here are some gross and disturbing pictures. Faint of heart: look away. I say, look away.

What you see here is a picture of normal mouth structure and color. Notice the size and color of a normal uvula (that little piece that hangs down at the back of the throat). And isn't that a lovely tongue?

Compare that to this uvula. Gross huh? Apparently sometimes the infection will spread to the uvula causing this freakish appendage. What made me notice? Spouse complained that he felt like he couldn't breath. I had a hard time getting a great picture. You know, to really do the thing justice. But you can see the thickness of the base.

It was about the size of a pinkie hanging down the back of his throat.

It's almost the size of his nostrils.

I love you Spouse.

I am laughing so hard right now at those pictures. Very graphic. Very helpful? :)

Sorry to hear about spouse. Hallee is down and out with some strange virus and wants me to lay in bed with her and tickle her arm day and night. Literally. All night. Love it.

Get better soon #4! And then take your wife out on a date. She deserves it.

You are hilarious! I am sorry that you have a 4th child, but like you said, you can see the hubby coming back soon! I hope he gets better really soon.

Armpit hair has nothing overly-enlarged uvula...that is sick! Sorry #4!

That stinks... I totallyfeel his pain. When we got back from Disneyland Mark got strep and tonsillitis too and was on twice the Amoxicillan I was. His throat didn't even hurt, just his glands... WHAT?! I could hardly swallow. Not fair. Also, why does Strep have to be different every time? Sure doesn't make it easy to diagnose.

Maybe Spouse needs his tonsils taken out?!

Haha. I got all excited when I saw the title of your post on my blog roll. I actually yelled in to Jeff, "JLJ is having another baby!" as I checked your blog right before we were heading to bed.

I understand about the child #4 in a sicko hubby. My friend enlightened me on sick husbands. We were out doing something together and I asked where her kids were. She said they were home with Dan. I thought Dan was sick. She said, "Oh, he is. But I figure I can't stop my life and rest when I get sick, so he can watch the kids while he lays on the couch."

It sounded a little harsh at the time, but I've taken advantage of that little piece of advice because (as you know, I am sure!) it is SOOOO true!

Hope Mr. #4 gets better soon. No fun!

I totally thought you were announcing something, of course. I guess you were. Sickness. Well, almost as good as a babe. You are hilarious. Poor uvula (which Jake is fascinated with, by the way)...

Love the picture of your tonsil JL. I feel even closer to you now that I have seen the inner workings of your mouth.

So sorry to hear about spouse. I'm not sure what's worse - being sick yourself or having your spouse be sick.

you are so hilarious. i know strep is no laughing matter, but the way you compare and contrast spouse to "child #4" is just awesome. it's too bad you don't have time to blog more often. :)

it disturbs me greatly that my RSS feed of your blog is not updated more accurately. it seriously takes a week to get any notice.

Ok. I take it all back. After reading your blog I somehow came down with my own severe case of strep throat (I knew it was extremely contaigous but via internet? :) )
Anway, after being flat on my back for three horrible days I'm now on MJ's side. I hope you took good care of him and nurtured his every request. MJ...I feel for you. It is HORRIBLE!!!!

Pretty nasty, but pretty funny. I'm impressed that spouse doesn't resemble #4 more often. Apparently I don't have mine trained well enough as I would say it is a 50/50 split.
